Yarm 1914

Died of sunstroke 7 Nov 1918 aged 43. Son of Thomas and Mary Shaughnessy of Yarm. He had been born in Yarm and was living there when he enlisted at Stockton. Stockton on Tees (Durham Road) Cem, UK – A3 K 20 [Soldiers Died says he was formerly with Leics Regt]

It is not easy to follow the family as their surname is spelt in at least 5 different ways in the records including Oshaughnessy, Shaughnessy, Shangnessy and Shaughnesy. Yarm1914 believe that James was born in 1878 when the family was living in Yarm. His father Thomas was 37 and a general labourer born in Ireland, his mother Mary aged 32 also came from Ireland. He had 3 brothers Michael 10, Owen 9 and Edward 6, plus sisters Alice 5 and Mary E. By 1881 they had moved to 28 Silver Street in West Hartlepool and were joined by Catherine, known as Kate. By 1891 Michael had moved away and was a lodger in Wolviston with the Garbutt family. Alice was living in Stockton Hospital as a wardmaid. Owen had moved out. Thomas had died and the Shaughnessey family moved to Jacksons Yard in Yarm where James became a general labourer. In 1900 Kate married Albert Leach from Stockton. Mary E left the household and James cousin Alice joined the family making 4 people in the house. James moved out to lodge with Bretherton family in a 13 roomed house in Worsall called High Sheds and became a bricklayer. The Leach family joined the depleated Shaughnesseys in Jacksons Yard by 1911.
